M3188 Burial Service Gold
Leaf and Tempera on Vellum
Circle of the Maître
François France, ca. 1460-70
A large arch-topped miniature with full-page border with blue and red
acanthus on a gold ground containing birds and sprays of flowers. The
scene is set in a walled cemetery, church at right, a man
in a grave holding a shrouded corpse, a priest on the left reads from
a book; an acolyte stands beside the priest and behind them are a group
of mourners. The composition of the miniature links this illumination
to the work of Maître François (see Walters ms 800, f.227). Maître François,
whose name is known from a contemporaneous document, was the leading
illuminator in Paris in the 1460s and 70s. His workshop was responsible
for some of the greatest illumination of the period.
Size: 176 x 130 mm. (Matted 10 x 8 in.)
$6,500
