Gold Leaf and Tempera on Vellum
Circle of the Master of Petrarch's Triumphs
France, Rouen, ca. 1510
Written
in dark brown ink in a regular lettre batarde script, in a double column,
on 25 lines, ruled in red, rubrics in red. Illuminated borders of brushed
liquid gold speckled with black-ink dots and containing silver-gray
and orange and blue acanthus along with orange, blue, and rose flowers.
Illuminated in the same workshop as a splendid Book of Hours in the
Rothschild Collection at Waddesdon Manor, MS 25, of about the same size
and layout, and in which appears similar text, decoration, and illumination
(Delaissé et al., Rothschild Collection, pp. 540-61). Sister
leaves are
in the collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
